Its activities are structured around technical departments dedicated to the study, development, optimization and promotion of advanced energy production methods, technological innovation aimed at optimizing sustainability and energy efficiency standards in production and, finally, research into the different impacts on the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere due to energy production and consumption.<\/p><p>Through its <strong>Environment Department (DMA)<\/strong>CIEMAT's priority objectives include the development of R&amp;D activities that contribute to improving knowledge of the atmospheric physicochemical processes that influence the chemical composition of the troposphere and its behavior, in order to help develop effective strategies to alleviate the serious problems facing the planet, in general, and our country in particular, related to the loss of ambient air quality and climate change.<\/p><p>The <strong>Unit of Characterization and Control of Atmospheric Pollution (UCCCA)<\/strong> of the DMA, on which the ACTRIS Station of Madrid depends, has been developing its research activity for more than 35 years in this field of knowledge. Its main focuses of scientific interest are the experimental investigation of atmospheric constituents, gases and aerosols, the characterization of primary pollutants emitted by different types of anthropic sources (industrial, urban, transport, etc.) and the monitoring of their evolution and effects on the environment through the different atmospheric processes involved in their dispersion, transport and physicochemical transformation. Therefore, the UCCCA is also working on the development of innovative technologies and methodologies that allow the complete and adequate characterization of atmospheric compounds of interest, both for their relevance as pollutant species and for their direct or indirect role in climate alteration. This includes the development of devices, instruments and integrated systems for sampling and measurement, as well as the improvement of sampling, analysis and monitoring techniques, and the evaluation of new techniques for the measurement of atmospheric pollution.<\/p><p>The UCCCA operates and maintains the Observational Platform Madrid-ACTRIS at the CIEMAT campus in Madrid as an atmospheric research station located in a suburban area representative of the processes taking place in the center of the Iberian Peninsula. The development of this station began in 2006 with the integration of the CIEMAT Lidar station in EARLINET (European Network of Advanced Lidar Systems). That milestone was the starting point on which CIEMAT's participation and involvement in what eventually became the European ACTRIS infrastructure was built.<\/p><p>The station currently participates in the segment of vertical profiling of aerosols with Lidar systems, and in the segment of in-situ monitoring of aerosols it has an important set of state-of-the-art instruments for measuring the properties of environmental aerosols (size distribution characteristics, optical properties, on-line chemical speciation, aerosol formation processes and hygroscopicity, ...). CIEMAT (Centro de Investigaciones Energ\u00e9ticas, Medioambientales y Tecnol\u00f3gicas), es un organismo p\u00fablico de investigaci\u00f3n (OPI) dependiente del Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovaci\u00f3n y Universidades, que cuenta con una plantilla de 1.350 personas aproximadamente y varios centros de investigaci\u00f3n en Espa\u00f1a, estando en Madrid su sede principal. Sus actividades se estructuran en torno a Departamentos t\u00e9cnicos dedicados al estudio, desarrollo, optimizaci\u00f3n y promoci\u00f3n de las v\u00edas de producci\u00f3n energ\u00e9tica avanzada, a la innovaci\u00f3n tecnol\u00f3gica orientada a optimizar los est\u00e1ndares de sostenibilidad y eficiencia energ\u00e9tica en la producci\u00f3n y, por \u00faltimo, a la investigaci\u00f3n de los diferentes impactos sobre la atm\u00f3sfera, hidrosfera, litosfera y biosfera debidos a la producci\u00f3n y consumo energ\u00e9tico. A trav\u00e9s de su Departamento de Medio Ambiente (DMA), CIEMAT tiene entre sus objetivos prioritarios el desarrollo de actividades de I+D que contribuyan a mejorar el conocimiento de los procesos f\u00edsico-qu\u00edmicos atmosf\u00e9ricos que influyen en la composici\u00f3n qu\u00edmica de la troposfera y en su comportamiento, con el fin de ayudar a desarrollar estrategias efectivas que permitan paliar los graves problemas a los que se enfrenta el planeta, con car\u00e1cter general, y nuestro pa\u00eds de manera particular, relacionados con la p\u00e9rdida de calidad del aire ambiente y con la alteraci\u00f3n del clima. La Unidad de Caracterizaci\u00f3n y Control de la Contaminaci\u00f3n Atmosf\u00e9rica (UCCCA) del DMA, de la que depende la Estaci\u00f3n ACTRIS de Madrid, desarrolla su actividad investigadora desde hace m\u00e1s de 35 a\u00f1os en este campo de conocimiento. Sus principales focos de inter\u00e9s cient\u00edfico son la investigaci\u00f3n experimental de los constituyentes atmosf\u00e9ricos, gases y aerosoles, la caracterizaci\u00f3n de los contaminantes primarios emitidos por los diferentes tipos de fuentes antr\u00f3picas (industriales, urbanas, transporte, etc.) y el seguimiento de su evoluci\u00f3n y efectos en el medio ambiente merced a los distintos procesos atmosf\u00e9ricos implicados en su dispersi\u00f3n, transporte y transformaci\u00f3n f\u00edsico-qu\u00edmica. Por ello la UCCCA trabaja tambi\u00e9n en el desarrollo de tecnolog\u00edas y metodolog\u00edas innovadoras que permitan la caracterizaci\u00f3n completa y adecuada de los compuestos atmosf\u00e9ricos de inter\u00e9s, tanto por su relevancia como especies contaminantes como por su papel directo o indirecto en la alteraci\u00f3n del clima. Esto incluye el desarrollo de dispositivos, instrumentos y sistemas integrados para el muestreo y medici\u00f3n, as\u00ed como la mejora de las t\u00e9cnicas de muestreo, an\u00e1lisis y seguimiento, y la evaluaci\u00f3n de nuevas t\u00e9cnicas para la medici\u00f3n de la contaminaci\u00f3n atmosf\u00e9rica. La UCCCA opera y mantiene en el campus del CIEMAT en Madrid la Observational Platform Madrid-ACTRIS como estaci\u00f3n de investigaci\u00f3n atmosf\u00e9rica ubicada en un \u00e1rea suburbana representativa de los procesos que tienen lugar en el centro de la Pen\u00ednsula Ib\u00e9rica. La andadura de esta estaci\u00f3n comenz\u00f3 en 2006 con la integraci\u00f3n de la estaci\u00f3n Lidar del CIEMAT en EARLINET (Red europea de Sistemas Lidar avanzados). Aquel hito constituy\u00f3 el punto de partida sobre el que se fue construyendo la participaci\u00f3n e implicaci\u00f3n de CIEMAT en lo que finalmente se constituy\u00f3 como la infraestructura europea ACTRIS. Actualmente la estaci\u00f3n participa en el segmento de perfilado vertical de aerosoles con sistemas Lidar, y en el segmento de monitorizaci\u00f3n in-situ de aerosoles cuenta con un importante conjunto de instrumentos de \u00faltima generaci\u00f3n para mediciones de las propiedades de los aerosoles ambientales (caracter\u00edsticas de distribuci\u00f3n seg\u00fan tama\u00f1os, propiedades \u00f3pticas, especiaci\u00f3n qu\u00edmica en l\u00ednea, procesos de formaci\u00f3n de aerosoles e higroscopicidad, \u2026). Asimismo, como informaci\u00f3n auxiliar de gran valor en esta estaci\u00f3n se determina en continuo las concentraciones ambientales de ciertos gases org\u00e1nicos e inorg\u00e1nicos y se monitorizan variables meteorol\u00f3gicas, todo ello de vital importancia para la comprensi\u00f3n de los procesos f\u00edsico-qu\u00edmicos implicados en la formaci\u00f3n de aerosoles atmosf\u00e9ricos y gases traza de gran relevancia en la atm\u00f3sfera.\u00a0 Por \u00faltimo, la UCCCA colabora estrechamente con las Administraciones p\u00fablicas en tareas especializadas de apoyo t\u00e9cnico, entre las que destaca la relacionada con la centralizaci\u00f3n, gesti\u00f3n y tratamiento de la informaci\u00f3n relativa a las emisiones a la atm\u00f3sfera producidas por el parque nacional de Grandes Instalaciones de Combusti\u00f3n, actividad que se desarrolla a trav\u00e9s de la OCEM-CIEMAT (Oficina de Control de las Emisiones de las Grandes Instalaciones de Combusti\u00f3n espa\u00f1olas).
