Laboratory on Atmospheric Pollution

El foco de investigación del Laboratorio de Contaminación Atmosférica de la Miguel Hernández University (LCA-UMH) es la caracterización de la dinámica de los aerosoles atmosféricos en la cuenca del Mediterráneo occidental.

The special geographical, orographic, climatic, and demographic characteristics of this area favour the presence of episodic events of highpollutant atmospheric particle concentrations that could affect human health and climate. In the context of ACTRIS, LCA-UMH runs two standard measurement stations: a regional background site at Aitana mountain (1558 mssl) and a suburban site at the UMH campus in Elche.

Both of them have made it possible to carry out in situ intensive and long-term measurement campaigns. Data on aerosol concentration, physical parameters, chemical composition and size distribution are collected. Statistical techniques, weather prediction models, aerosol and dust maps, and satellite images are also used in the determination of the contribution of emission sources and singular events to PM levels. The scope of the aerosol study include its optical properties (to estimate the radiative forcing of aerosols) and its content of organic compounds in aerosol submicron sizes (to assess its potential adverse effects on health).
